Chelsea's inept performance in their 3-1 defeat to 10-man Monaco in the Champions League semi-finals drew the wrath of the English press.
'Stinkerman' was the Daily Mail's title for Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri who admitted after the game he was to blame for tinkering with his side.
Ranieri sent on
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as an extra striker with the game tied 1-1 and saw Monaco
pounce on a bare Chelsea midfield to score two killer goals.
'Tinkerman gets comeuppance' was how The Daily Telegraph summed up Ranieri's
'bizarre' second-half tinkering which allowed Monaco to seize the initiative.
Ranieri, whose constant reshuffling of his expensively-assembled squad, quickly won him the tag 'Tinkerman' this season, appears to have blown any chance he had of staying as Chelsea manager next season.
He had already infuriated his Chelsea bosses by telling the Spanish daily Marca: "Roman Abramovich knows nothing about football." His agents promptly issued a 'lost in translation' denial when the story hit the news-stands.
The Russian oil billion billionaire paid 140 million pounds for Chelsea last July and has since spent the same amount on new players.
But Monaco coach Didier Deschamps' hard-working team made the Londoners look very ordinary on Tuesday.
And both the Mail and The Sun reported Abramovich and chief executive Peter Kenyon flew to Spain for a meeting with Porto coach Jose Mourinho's agent.
The pair were pictured climbing into a private jet before flying to Vigo in northern Spain where they were said to have met Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes for talks lasting seven hours.
Mourinho stayed
with his team who were due to play Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday in the other
Champions League semi-final.
